Origin: First settled in 1639, this town was a part of Hampton known as North Hill or North Parish. Residents began petitioning for separation from Hampton as early as 1719, but township was not granted until 1742, following separation of New Hampshire from Massachusetts. North Hampton was the birthplace of General Henry Dearborn, commander-in-chief of the American forces in the War of 1812, for whom Fort Dearborn (Chicago) and Dearborn, Michigan, were named.

Population Trends: Population in North Hampton grew very quickly for twenty years, then growth slowed for the next thirty years. Decennial growth rates ranged from a five percent increase between 1970-1980 to a 73 percent increase between 1950-1960. Over fifty years, North Hampton's population increased by a total of 3,155 residents, going from 1,104 in 1950 to 4,259 residents in 2000. The 2003 Census estimate for North Hampton was 4,596 residents, which ranked 73rd among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.

Population Density, 2003: 317.0 persons per square mile of land area. North Hampton contains 13.9 square miles of land area and 0.01 square miles of inland water area.
